Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective. — James 5:1

I love the word “offensive.” I started my political career on the offense, so to speak. The first charge give to me at the Christian Civic League of Maine was to develop an effective political strategy against the sodomite threat. That was in the late 1980s. I consulted a smart attorney friend. We developed an offensive strategy because we reasoned that playing defense wasn’t working. The League took our advice and launched a referendum against homosexuality. From 1990 to the present — nearly thirty years — I have been on the offense against sodomy as a Christian. I started politically. I’m ending theologically, even though I’m not a theologian.

The word “offensive” has two main meanings. One is “The part of attacking; as to act on the offensive.” The other is “causing displeasure or some degree of anger; displeasure … Assailant; used in attack; opposed to defensive; as an offensive weapon or engine.” Our offensive strategy worked brilliantly in Maine. In a politically Leftist state we managed to slow the “gay” juggernaut.

We forced them to spend much more time and money than they would otherwise have spent selling their lies. When I say “we” I don’t mean the Republican Party or Roman Catholics. The “we” in Maine was small evangelical congregations. They were eventually silenced through shaming by the Republican and religious oligarchy. The enemies of reason enjoyed bottomless financial resources. The battle reminds me of the New Testament in the Bible.

The letters and gospel narratives are the story of grand failure, suffering and martyrdom at the hands of religious and political (Roman) leadership. The small but growing group of first century Christians had spiritual principles to sustain them. They had no money. Worldly power was three centuries in the future. The only influence they could wield came from the power that flowed through them. This power originated in heaven … in God.  They rested in that power. They brought it into their communities. They performed miracles.

The Christians of Maine performed a political miracle in the nineties and the OOs.

Now the West needs more than a political miracle. The West needs a spiritual rebirth. I see it starting everywhere I look online. God is always good.  He never abandons His people. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.

Amen.
